Review: The Osmonds, City Hall
The Star

A bizarre first half featured an interminable (20 minute) Osmond quiz on screen. The support played some classic 70’s tunes, but the frustrated crowd by then wanted their heroes.
Thankfully Jimmy, Merrill and Jay finally appeared in the second half with the strident, psychedelic Crazy Horses including flashing lights and pyrotechnics. The crowd were immediately on their feet dancing and waving to a series of groovy tunes including Having a Party and a cover of The Temptations’ I Can’t Get Next to You.
The punters certainly got their money’s worth as the charismatic and venerable trio belted out an astonishing 21 hit set.
As well as their fine singing voices, they play multiple instruments. An unexpected highlight was Jay’s heavy metal style drum solo.
The audience may have aged along with their idols and replaced hysteria with enthusiastic applause but the atmosphere was still electric.
